Help & advice

What order to do what and when for a kitchen renovation

You've got your dream kitchen in mind - the perfect tiles, lighting, maybe even a chefs table come breakfast bar that doubles as a home working station. But before you dive headfirst into your renovation project, hit pause for a moment. There's more to a successful kitchen reno than pretty finishes. Here's your top-level guide to navigating a kitchen renovation like a pro.

Sort out your Needs vs. Wants

Kitchens are hard workers in your home. Take a step back and figure out what you need versus what you simply want. Once you've got your lists, prioritise. Can you trade off a nice looking shelf against more storage? This step will help you anchor your decisions throughout the project.

Budget first, decide later

Set a clear budget early on. Nothing derails a project faster than realising mid-way through that your dream appliances cost as much as a small car. Pro tip: Build a buffer into your budget for unexpected expenses once everything is stripped back. Because, trust us, they'll come up.

Consider refurbished appliances - they're easier on the wallet and better for the planet - and reuse what you can: Keeping your kitchen layout or existing appliances, cabinet carcasses can slash costs significantly.

Create a to-scale plan and design your layout

Explore different layouts: Galley, U-shape, L-shape, or an island? Map out what's possible with your space in a to-scale drawing. Go beyond the classic work triangle (sink, fridge, cooker / hob). Think about the tasks you carry out in the kitchen. A standard grouping is the dishwasher, sink, and bin to streamline cleanup. The same can apply for baking - trays, mixer, pantry, or even your home bar - freezer, glasses, bottles! And aim for at least 900mm clearance between units for smooth flow.

Start from the outside in. Draw out the structure of your space, measure where windows and doors start and end, and include any obstacles like support beams. If you are considering any recofiguration, it pays to understand what types of walls you have where - (solid vs. stud) - as well as being useful to know when it comes to fitting anything against those walls. Then work add furniture and try out different options. Don't forget your lighting plan too!

Next, choose your style

Think practical

Be realistic about how you use the room, and where it is in your home. Is it bright and naturally lit? What is going to be practical for you, your family and your space. Are those tiny tiles with lots of grout going to be too much upkeep?

Go broad

Before deciding on a single look, go off and gather a long list of all the images you like. This could be physical – magazines, photographs – or digital, this is where sites like Pinterest come into their own. Pin all the images you like (in a private board if you'd rather).

Narrow down

Ask yourself what you like about the images you've gathered. What's the common thread? Is there a colour that stands out or a texture, shape, look? And then ask yourself which of these can apply to your kitchen, in your house, considering what's practical for the people using it.

Land on your style, create a mood board!

The overall look you are going for, and specifics like colour, wall and floor textures, fixtures / metals, style of kitchen cabinet doors and handles (and worktops), lighting and accessories.

Materials that require low energy to produce, or natural materials delivered without intensive mining, have the least impact on the planet. Look for certification and information on sourcing and manufacturing processes when you are making a decision.

Find the right trades

The people you hire can make or break your renovation.

  • Friends, family, and local forums are your best bet for trustworthy trades
  • Do your research - Check reviews, past projects, and even financial health (yes, it's worth a Companies House search)
  • Get three quotes - Ensure you receive detailed breakdowns of costs for materials and labour. Clarify if quotes are fixed or estimates
  • Immediate availability might be a red flag- Quality trades are often in high demand

Prep like a pro

  • Order early - Kitchens and appliances can have long lead times. Plan for deliveries and returns well in advance
  • Clear the space - Empty cupboards, set up a temporary kitchen, and clear paths for trades
  • Protect your home - Cover floors and seal off other rooms to minimise dust and damage

Before your trades pack up, do a full check: Test appliances and fixtures, note any issues and confirm fixes in writing. Confirm you know where everything is - like the main water shut-off - and how it works.

This is your chance to ensure everything's working perfectly before you sign off, and get cooking!
